It always starts with a casual text. "Hey, we should all go to Mexico!"
By the end of the week, there's a group chat with a name like "Greece or Bust," and someone's cousin's college roommate is suddenly tagging along.
Meet the Pied Piper.
Every group trip has one — the person who sparks the idea, rallies the troops, and somehow manages to keep everyone (mostly) on the same page.
They're not travel agents. They're not professional planners. They're just really good at getting people excited about travel.
And if you're smart, you'll learn to love them.
The Power of the Group
I've built my business on group travel. Not because I'm a logistics wizard (I'm not), but because I understand the psychology of the pack.
People are more likely to book a trip when they know they're not going alone. They crave the shared experience, the inside jokes, the Instagram memories. And the Pied Piper is the one who makes it happen.
They're your advocate, your cheerleader, your personal marketing team. They're the reason fifteen people suddenly want to book a villa in Tuscany, and they're the reason you're about to have the best month of your year.
So how do you work with them? How do you turn their enthusiasm into bookings?
Treat Them Like VIPs
First, recognize their value. These aren't just "regular" clients — they're influencers. They have the ear of their entire friend group, and their opinion matters.
That means you need to treat them like VIPs. Offer them perks, discounts, or a small commission for bringing in the group. Make them feel special, appreciated, and important.
Because they are.
Make It Easy for Them to Share
Second, make it easy for them to share the details with their group. Create a custom landing page with all the information about the trip — the itinerary, the pricing, the booking process.
Give them a link they can easily share in the group chat, and make sure it's mobile-friendly. The easier it is for them to spread the word, the more likely people are to book.
Don't Let the Chat Control You
Third, set some boundaries. Group chats can be chaotic, overwhelming, and time-consuming. You don't want to be fielding questions at 11 PM about whether the resort has gluten-free options.
Instead, create a FAQ document that answers all the common questions, and encourage the Pied Piper to share it with the group. Let them handle the basic inquiries, and only step in when there's a real issue.
Remember, you're the travel agent, not the therapist.
Embrace the Chaos
Finally, embrace the chaos. Group trips are never perfect. There will be disagreements, cancellations, and last-minute changes.
But that's okay. That's part of the fun.
Your job is to roll with the punches, stay calm, and keep everyone (mostly) happy. And if you can do that, you'll not only earn their business for life, you'll also become the go-to agent for their entire friend group.
The moral of the story: Find the Pied Pipers in your network, treat them like gold, and let them work their magic.
Because when the trip leaves the group chat, that's when the real fun begins.
